I encountered my first reptile in Oregon as I rode southbound on Friday--a garter snake that I caught in the forest north of Mt. Hood. I've seen lots of amphibians in Oregon--newts and toads and frogs galore--but for some reason, not a single snake or even a lizard before now. Perhaps all that snow has something to do with it . . .
