On the road again
On Sunday we shifted campsites, moving to Green Valley horse camp in Cuyamaca State Park. It really wasn't all that conveniently located for what we were doing, and if we had known about some other possible options we probably would have done something different, as we had to do a lot of driving between here […]

Second day surprises
Saturday, April 5, 2014 So there was a surprise this morning when my mom and I woke up to rain. Mother Nature is definitely proving to be fickle. The terrible drought throughout this winter is one of the things we most worried about before we began, as many of the usual water sources on the […]

At the southern terminus of the PCT by the Mexican border
Friday, April 4, 2014 D-day at last! We arose before the sun—and discovered a layer of ice over everything. So much for warm and sunny California. The temperature had dropped into the 20’s overnight, so we were glad we’d packed blankets for the horses (and so were they). After breakfast, we loaded Takoda into the […]

Practice makes perfect
As Shyla continued to heal, I took both horses out to practice packing, starting with duffel bags stuffed with straw on Takoda, just to get him used to the sensation of having something big and bulky on his back. We rode on our usual trails in Topanga to get both he and Shyla comfortable with […]

A learning curve . . . for all of us!
Our original plan called for me to ride Shyla and pack with Takoda--a plan we hadn't cleared with either horse. Shyla was taking longer to heal from her check ligament injury that we had hoped, so we had to come up with a back-up plan that involved using just Takoda in case she was unable […]
